The Eastside Culture Crawl is an annual FREE 3-day visual arts festival. This event involves artists who work on the east side of Vancouver, BC, Canada in an area bounded by Main Street to Commercial Drive and from First Avenue north to the waterfront. On this site you will find complete information about the event, including a printable map and a list of our participating artists.

The 2008 Crawl map is now online! Plan your route ahead of time and while you're at it, check out all of the Crawl's newest participants.

The Eastside Culture Crawl officially began in 1997 with 45 artists in 3 Strathcona area studio buildings and was attended by a few hundred people. This year will mark our 12th year!

The Eastside Culture Crawl is an annual 3-day November event that involves artists who live in Vancouver's Eastside in an area bounded by Main St., 1st Ave., Commercial Drive, and the Waterfront. Painters, jewelers, sculptors, furniture makers, musicians, weavers, potters, writers, printmakers, photographers, glassblowers; from emerging artists to those of international fame... these are just a sampling of the exciting talents featured during this unique chance to meet local artists in their studios.

Purchase something that strikes your fancy, commission something to be uniquely yours, or just browse through the studios and meet the artists, learning about their specific works of art, materials and tools, approaches and techniques. This is a once a year opportunity to meet many diversely talented artists and view their creations in the studios where they work. Be part of this exciting event, which brings people from all over the Lower Mainland, and share in the imaginations that enrich our neighbourhood and lives.

It's time again for another solo exhibition of my most recent work. This time I will present you with Robotisation part II, Decomposition... Last year was a great success due to all of your support. I hope it will be as successful this year. I surely hope to see you all. Come to see the art, come to drink some wine and come to socialize.

Opening Reception: November 22, 7 pm - 12 am.

Exhibition will be up from the 22nd of November to the 13th of December.

-Karine Guyon

Artist's Statement: "When I paint I am. When I don't paint, I don't exist. As an artist what inspires my work are both existing elements from the past, combined to abstract ideologies of the future. The goal of my work is to liberate the unconscious mind from the consequences and effects of industrialization, technology and science.

How I make decision in the course of my work, why I select certain materials and colors are however deliberate actions. My technique I call "decomposition". I compose and decompose, apply and remove, create and destroy. This technique has greatly been inspired by the observation of decaying objects and structures. My work is a work of discordance which relies on a palette of color generous in contradiction and harmony. My technique is lose and fluid but aggressive and unafraid. Finally my subjects are characters delivering storylines from the future but their essence remains mysteriously tribal and raw.

My current work grew out of my daily life experiences, observations and exploration . The main topic of my present serie is robotisation. Robotisation is: The replacement of human and traditional machines by a machine entirely automatic. In my live-in studio, at the heart of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, I became both a witness and voyeur of the so called world's oldest profession, prostitution. A profession where its participants appeared to be dehumanized, automates who's daily work consist in being replacement and human ejaculation mechanism. By analyzing prostitution and it's social function, alongside my observation of traditional mechanism, computerized mechanism, kinetic mechanism and living organism, I was able to create a body of intriguing, visually challenging and thought provoking work. With my work, I am attempting to create a fictive but pure experience for the viewer. An entrance in an artistic laboratory of compartmentalized thought processes, obsessions and emotions. A place where the gap between imagination and creation is limitless. My work seeks to stimulate, impact and push boundaries in both myself and the viewer."

KARIN BUBAS
Valley of the Heart’s Delight

November 20 – Year end, 2008

Opening Reception:
Thursday, November 20th, 2008 6 - 8pm

Artist in attendance

The Monte Clark Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition Valley of the Heart’s Delight from Vancouver-based artist Karin Bubas.

Partially inspired by early Technicolor films and hand-tinted photographs, Bubaš’ largescale
digital photographs are presented as subtly orchestrated scenes of colour and light. Each of the five images presents for the viewer a carefully costumed figure in a reminiscent landscape. The result is a mysterious and story-like dynamic between the setting and the individual. Taken on a panoramic camera, two of the images explore this format in a horizontal configuration emblematic of the landscape genre, and for three Bubaš has aligned her images in a vertical format to dramatic effect.

The inherently cinematic narratives are derived from archetypal myths and stories, creating for the viewer imagery both ominous and enchanting, the figures appearing as apparitions in their mystical settings. As Bubas carefully stages these five tableaux, allusions of myths and new romanticism come together with cinematic sensitivity. The end result is a series of supernatural costume scenes reminiscent of Waterhouse's Pre-Raphaelite paintings as well as the films of Alfred Hitchcock.

Karin Bubas was born in North Vancouver and currently lives and works in Vancouver, been exhibited nationally and internationally.

For further information and press materials please contact the Monte Clark Gallery.

What do you find at most Indian restaurants in the Lower Mainland? A lineup of lager. And for the odd lager loather that walks in the door, there will be a Guinness, not that it will actually pair with anything on the menu. This dinner will give you an opportunity to experience other beer styles with the cuisine of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. König Ludwig Weissbier, Saison D’Epeutre (or Duvel), Tree Cutthroat Pale Ale, and R & B Hop Goblin' IPA will be served with a Thali platter containing brined eggplant, squash curry, chickpea curry, green beans in coconut, jack fruit curry, chicken curry, fish and cassava curry, pickle, raita, poppadam, and steamed rice. Presented by the CBC Radio Orchestra

Join the CBC Radio Orchestra and conductor Alain Trudel for their farewell performance.

The orchestra celebrates its longstanding commitment to Canadian composition with new commissions by four brilliant young Canadian composers: Kati Agocs, John Stetch, Samy Moussa and Owen Pallett.

Reflecting on its unique heritage, the orchestra also revisits the 1980 CBC-commissioned masterpiece by Claude Vivier, Lonely Child, with soprano Nathalie Paulin.

The concert concludes with one of the greatest symphonies of all time, Beethoven's 7th.

Formed in 1938, the CBC Radio Orchestra has been renowned as an ensemble of passion, versatility and innovation. As North America's last remaining broadcast ensemble, it has been a legacy of the days when radio orchestras were to be found all over the continent, as they still are in Europe.

Unique not only in its history, the CBC Radio Orchestra has also been set apart by its programming. With an audience made up of radio listeners, rural and urban, throughout the country, it has presented a rich, musical tapestry that has engaged, stimulated and challenged its diverse patrons.

The Orchestra's mandate has been to make engaging musical radio programs, commission and perform works by Canadian composers, showcase Canadian performers and conductors, and discover and expose Canadian excellence.

A note from the Chan Centre:
Since opening in 1997, the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts has been honoured to host the CBC Radio Orchestra on the stage of the Chan Shun Concert Hall. We would like to thank conductors Mario Bernardi and Alain Trudel and all of the musicians and staff of the CBC Radio Orchestra for their tremendous contribution to the arts not only in Vancouver but throughout Canada and the world. It will be a great loss to our programming to no longer be able to host this fine radio orchestra in our venue.

Skratch Bastid

So... What do the South Bronx and Skratch Bastid have in common? They're both the birthplace of hip-hop and they both have red hair. That's what's up. And from here on in, we'll be referring to the subject as ‘Bastid’. Some people do call him ‘Skratch’ and some people also hate fried chicken. It's just a matter of taste. You know how Bastid makes nachos? One at a time, that's how. He puts a dab of salsa and grated cheese on each individual nacho chip and then puts them all into the oven like little nacho cookies. That's dedication to a craft. That's attention to detail and a creative mind. That's a mad scientist. That’s also a really slow way to make nachos.

What it do? Bastid is a real DJ (no iPod). He started DJing as a teenager in his Halifax basement and will someday be a grown up, though, he will most likely never be Filipino. However, he can rip the cuts, as evidenced by his competition history, taking home the Scribble Jam DJ Title 3 times. Professionally and for a living he makes cheese by rocking crowds everywhere and anywhere. Canadia, United Snakes, Europe, you better ask somebody.

…That’s it? Oh yeah, and he's nice on the production tip, too. After releasing an album independently, his beats caught the ear of longtime hometown associate Buck 65, planting the seeds of collaboration. Buck's ‘07 release, 'Situation' (Warner Music/Strange Famous), has been critically acclaimed as a return-to-form for the artist, with notable enthusiasm on Bastid’s production, scored on 12 tracks. Plus there's his mixtapes. A professional blend of selection, skill & humour; with a little bit of cocky-prick on the side. Hot like in the kitchen, they are. Hot like a polar bear in Texas. Check out his 2007 installment “Get Up!” for the evidence. He once heard it blaring out of his own grandmother’s Dodge Spirit. Basically, Bastid gets busy.

What it look like? He stands 5'10". Sometimes sports a beard. He plays anything and everything from James Brown to 3-6 Mafia to U2 and makes it sound good. Years of sleepless nights practicing routines for competitions have left him with more-than-ample skills and not much of a social life, providing the perfect combination of wanting to win the crowd over and doing it quite fancily. Like a modern day Axl Rose. Or something.

Loosies: Bastid is from the land of the fisherman and the McLobster: - Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Currently he lives in Montreal and has residencies locally and in Toronto. Oh, and on Fridays he hands out blankets and reads stories to orphans. Both Bastid's parents and Jazzy Jeff think that he's a good DJ. He owns more records than mp3's. He enjoys the musical energy of M.O.P. more than that of Benny Benassi. He's allergic to being broke and most importantly, Bastid never trusts a big butt and a smile.
