The Arts Club Theatre Company is pleased to announce their 6th annual fundraising gala GLITTER–The Arts Club Honours. The star-studded, glitzy evening will include the celebration of three artists who have made a significant artistic contribution to the company over the years. These honours will be bestowed annually in the run-up to the 50th anniversary of the Arts Club in 2013. This year’s recipients are Leon Bibb, Morris Panych, and Janet Wright.

Bill Millerd, Artistic Managing Director said, “I am looking forward to publicly honouring those who have contributed artistically to the company over the years. This year’s honourees are to be celebrated for their extraordinary talent, creativity, and dedication to the history of the Arts Club, and to the greater Vancouver arts community.”

The event will be hosted by Mark Docherty, news anchor for Citytv’s Breakfast Television, and will feature a cocktail reception, dinner, entertainment, and live and silent auctions. A three-course dinner will be masterfully created and catered by Dino Renaerts, executive chef of Diva at the Met, and paired with the fine wines of Sonoma Vineyards (California). Proceeds from the gala will help support youth arts and educational programs such as the Student Matinee Series, the Understudy program, and LEAP: Playwrighting Series at the Arts Club.

About the Honourees:
Over the past thirty-five years, singer and actor Leon Bibb has made numerous appearances at the Arts Club. A member of the original Arts Club cast of Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, which opened on the Seymour Street Stage in 1972, he joined the cast again for a 1987 remount, and a 25-year reunion performance in 1997. Other Arts Club productions include An Evening with the Bibbs and Mortifees, Side By Side By Sondheim, Give Out the News, and A Musical Evening with Ruth Nichol and Leon Bibb, which was the first performance on the Arts Club’s Revue Theatre Stage in 1983.

Morris Panych is known throughout Canada, Britain, and the U.S. as a playwright and director. Seven of his plays have premiered on the stages of the Arts Club including 7 Stories, The Dishwashers, The Ends of the Earth, Girl in the Goldfish Bowl, The Necessary Steps, and Simple Folk. As an actor he has performed in five Arts Club productions–Art, The Mystery of Irma Vep, The Importance of Being Earnest, Being at Home with Claude, and Children of a Lesser God. In addition he has directed 10 Arts Club productions, including the musicals She Loves Me and Sweeney Todd, both of which won Jessie Awards for Outstanding Production and Direction.

Janet Wright has worked as both an actor and director in 36 productions (22 as actor; 14 as performer) for the Arts Club. Among her directing credits: It’s Snowing on Saltspring, Thirteen Hands, Steel Magnolias, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Glengarry Glen Ross, winner of a Jessie Award for Best Direction. Her work on Elizabeth Rex earned Jessie Awards for Best Production, Best Actor, and Best Actress, among others. Ms. Wright currently plays Emma in the popular CTV series Corner Gas.

In Brief:
The event begins at 6:30 pm with a cocktail reception and silent auction followed by entertainment, dinner, and auction. The Villa Amato Ballroom is located at 88 East 1st Avenue and Quebec. Tickets are $200 (including a $100 tax receipt) and are available through the Arts Club Box Office at 604.687.1644.

The Arts Club Theatre Company, now in its 45th season, is a not-for-profit charitable organization that operates two theatres on a year-round basis, the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage and the Granville Island Stage. The company also tours a three-show mini-season throughout the province annually.

Quintron & Miss Pussycat

Click HERE to listen them now

Mr. Quintron is a very eccentric concert and nightclub organist from New Orleans, Louisiana. He plays music on a custom made Hammond / Rhodes combo synthesizer / organ (which he's got all built up to look like a car with real working headlights) backed by raw simple drum machine beats and his own patented invention THE DRUM BUDDY - a rotating, light-activated analog synthesizer with five oscillator circuits that create drum sounds. It is played much in the same way that a DJ spins and scratches records.

Jay Poggi (aka Quintron) has described his organ playing as a cross between the stylings of Raymond Scott, the composer whose music was famously used in Warner Bros. cartoons, and jazz organist Jimmy Smith. Aside from his organ playing, Poggi is a multi-instrumentalist who performs on traditional items like guitar, drums, and trumpet, as well as homemade inventions such as the Disco Light Machine, an attachment for drums where light is triggered by sound; the Spit Machine, a drum machine powered by saliva; and, of course, the Drum Buddy.

Of course lets not forget about Miss Pussycat (aka Panacea Theriac) who plays maracas and sings backup as well as entertaining all age groups with her highly amusing technicolor puppet shows. The Quintron / Miss Pussycat experience is one of barely controlled electronic chaos, "Swamp-Tech" beats, small explosions, incredible clothes, and entertaining puppet stories. You can see them perform regularly at the Spellcaster Lodge in New Orleans, Louisiana or on one of their many tours around the world. This act somehow has equal relevance in sleazy nightclubs, pizza restaurants, and university lecture halls." More about Quintron & Miss Pussycat...

Don’t miss the duo Quintron & Miss Pussycat with special guests at the Biltmore Cabaret on October 18th 2008.

Ideas on Tap is a light business networking event for hi-tech professionals in Vancouver plus internet advertisers, social media marketers, bloggers, video game developers and other fans of the tech community.

This free event will feature a competition where 5 contestants deliver a 60 second pitch, idea, recruiting message, or elevator pitch from a milk crate. This could be talking about their company, a start-up idea, new technology, hiring, or raising capital.

The audience will vote for their 2 favourite pitches and prizes will be awarded. The event is being held in the Yaletown Brewing Company, Vancouver's favourite brewpub. In sticking with the theme of the venue, voting will be done by tapping beer glasses on tables or bars.

RED BULL PRESENTS - BIG BANG

YOUR SOUND-STRONUATS

CHROMEO - LIVE
http://www.myspace.com/chromeo

Chromeo is Pee Thug and Dave 1: best friends since their adolescence, virtuoso musicians, walking hip hop encyclopedias, and the only successful Arab/Jew partnership since the dawn of human culture. After spending the three years since the release of their debut album, She’s In Control, jet setting, globetrotting, and embarking on an overall sensual conquest of planet Earth, Chromeo headed back to their Montreal lab to put together album number deux. The result, Fancy Footwork, is quite simply the most smoothed-out, hook-heavy, unabashed lovers’ funk since Chromeo’s last album, actually. Recently the winner of the “Dance Album of the year” at the 2008 Juno Awards, Chromeo has shared stages with Bloc Party, Justice, and Flosstradamus, and has had their infectious tunes featured in various ad campaigns as well as the “Need for Speed” video game.

CALVIN HARRIS - DJ
http://www.myspace.com/calvinharristv

Calvin Harris invented disco. No, Calvin Harris reinvented disco. He was Marks & Spencers' champion shelf-stacker two years running. He made his debut album fuelled by chicken breast fillets. He knows the whereabouts of Alex Kapranos' secret studio-hideaway-laboratory-home cuz it's quite near his own place in Dumfries. Calvin Harris's debut album, with the subtle title "I Created Disco", cost nil to record, but delivers ultimate value. He fashions future-disko using an ancient Amiga computer and is, right now, (literally) knocking together a stonking live set using MDF and 204 samples.

DIRTY SOUTH
http://www.myspace.com/dirtysouth909

In a few years' time, Dirty South aka Dragan Roganovic has made an instant name for himself in the dance music industry, impressing the who’s who of international DJs, producers, media and music lovers with his ability to dish up ready-made dancefloor bombs. As his trademark blend of beats inspires more and more house lovers from across the globe to sit up and take notice, the future is certainly looking bright down south.

TROUBLE ANDREW
Http://www.myspace.com/troubleandrew

Trevor “Trouble” Andrew aka TRZA is a Canadian born professional snow boarder and inventor of "Crunk rock" (a genre of music created by mixing the musical influences of his youth). Recently Trevor and his band, the "Trouble Gang", have been on the road playing shows around the world and laying down the new LP in hotel rooms. They have shared the stage with the likes of The GZA, Justice, Rick Ross, Stiffed, Santogold, De La Soul, Mickey Avalon, Spank Rock, Steve Aoki, Wyclef Jean, Dave Navarro, Lady Sovereign, and many more.
