Festival Vancouver is proud to present Gala Opera Evening at Orpheum Theatre.

Marianne Fiset, soprano
Denyce Graves, mezzo-soprano
Mario Bernardi, conductor
Vancouver Opera Orchestra

The elevator to the dress circle and balcony level will not be working on the evening of this performance. Any persons with mobility issues should choose seats in the orchestra level.
Pair two superb operatic voices with the brilliant Vancouver Opera Orchestra, then add some of opera’s best-loved arias, duets and orchestral favourites. You know you’ll want to be there - and why not bring someone with you who hasn’t yet discovered the drama and excitement of this great musical form?

American mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves is a worldwide operatic favourite and appears regularly in the great opera houses, from La Scala to Covent Garden to the Met. Her signature role is Carmen, which she’s performed opposite Placido Domingo. After her New York recital debut, The New York Times wrote, "She is a strikingly attractive stage presence and a communicative artist who had the audience with her through four encores."

Montreal soprano Marianne Fiset is the 2007 Grand Prize winner of the Montréal International Musical Competition. She’s presented recitals in London and Paris, and now Vancouver opera fans can hear what all the excitement is about!

The Gala program includes works by Tchaikowsky, Bernstein, Barber, Saint-Saens and Dvorak.

The Vancouver Opera Orchestra
The Vancouver Opera Orchestra is one of only two professional opera orchestras in Canada and has been recognized as a formidable musical force. Formed in 1977, the orchestra’s first performances were for that year’s production of Massenet’s Le Roi de Lahore, starring Joan Sutherland. Several players who were in the pit for Le Roi de Lahore are still members of the VO Orchestra, which since then has played more than a hundred opera productions and many concerts, most recently Die Freishütz for Festival Vancouver. The orchestra has strong ties to the community: many of its players are professional educators and active freelance musicians in the Lower Mainland. Collectively, they make an important contribution to the cultural life of our city.

Hed Kandi is a record label, radio show, international club sensation and general soundtrack to life! Musically, Hed Kandi is all about style! Judging by the number of requests we get for what some people now term Hed Kandi music, our sound has almost become a genre in itself.

First and foremost we’re about seriously good club music. To define that more clearly it would be true to describe this as predominantly vocal, soulful house, US garage and glittering disco – always deliciously stylish, of course! You’d findthese on our Disco Kandi and Disco Heaven album releases. However, there are many other sides to Kandi’s dancefloor so our albums and style also cover the darker side of house music with a more electro feel on albums like Twisted Disco, to deeper soulful bar and lounge grooves on Nu Cool.

Jamie's musical preference of soulful, funky house was originally influenced by the sounds coming from the big house producers in America, particularly New York and Chicago. The likes of Masters at Work, Jazz and Groove, Tony Humphries and Florida based Brian Tappert.

By the mid '90s Jamie had a number of residencies in London and was promoting his own club nights. Also spending more time in the studio producing his own tracks, one of which featured on a Stereo Sushi album and entered the DJ mag hype chart at number one. The Hed Kandi brand was starting to grow and after playing at the Back to Love parties in those early days, on Christmas night with John Jones and Andy Norman in a small night club in Ealing, Jamie's connection with Hed Kandi had begun. It wasn't until a few years later that he would feature as a regular Hed Kandi resident.

During his time with Kandi Jamie has travelled the world representing the famous brand from; Australia, Dubai, the Philippines, America, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ibiza and many other cities across Europe. "I have to say I really am having the time of my life djing right now, being able to see the world and to work with such a close and professional team at Hed Kandi is something I will never take for granted". It still amazes me now that the identity of this brand can be recognised so far from home and long may that continue" adds Jamie.

Junck is one of Vancouver's hottest new photographers. Dont miss this show.

Stop by the IEG on the 30th for a cool refreshing Grolsch and enjoy the exceptional light boxes and compositions by this exciting new artist.

Jordan Junck in one of Vancouver’s most exciting new photographers. Having had an extensive professional photographic career Junck turns his hand smoothly to his fine art practice with the release of his new body of work Submerged. Junck’s light boxes illuminate his breathtaking figurative work. Technically advanced, Junck’s staged and directed photo shoots create some of the most interesting photography to enticed the Vancouver art scene this year.

“Submerged is an exploration. The water-based series draws on contrasting elements and environments to explore perspective, light, angle, space and emotion.

This particular collection from the series strips the image down to a simple, basic state. Soft reflections and flowing lines invite the viewer to explore the environment, their connection with the subject and to draw personal parallels. The images evoke feelings of detachment and surrender. Subjects hang suspended; there is a sense of serenity as they accept the moment and release. At a basic level, the images explore a spectrum of emotions as tones of euphoria, optimism, eroticism and sorrow wash away leaving the subject vulnerable and at peace.” (Jordan Junck)

Saturday, July 26 — USA presented by Starlight Casino

Company:
Western Enterprises, Incorporated

Designer of Show and Soundtrack:
Gary P. Caimano

Website:
www.fireworksbywestern.com

Theme: Love Will Change the World

As with all the shows that Western Enterprises choreographs, it is music that directs the theme, the tenor, and the purpose for design. Music, like pyrotechnic effects, is carefully auditioned for theme and artistic meaning, and the fusion of this music and fire must take the audience to a higher level of the senses, a mythic appreciation (a joy) of the delicate balance between music and fire.

Our theme, love will change the world, is presented in three acts:

Act One: Change is coming
Act Two: Beauty is found in love and peace
Act Three: Our dreams will keep us forever young
