Join other Meet Up members for our Western Round Up Camp out from Friday morning 16 October thru Monday noon, 19 October. Break out them boots, hats and leather vests and bring your horse if you have one! The location is Porters Landing area of the Jemez Mountains, approximately 65 miles from Abq. This is a "free" camp area and there is plenty of wood in the area for our camp fire. Skipper will provide and enclosed heated 10' x 10' area with indoor camp fire for the cool evenings! The area is accessible with two wheel drive vehicles and there is plenty of flat ground for RV's, pop-up's and tents. The stream is a short walking distance away. We will have a Chuck Wagon Cook out on Saturday around noon, so bring a main dish and if you bring guests please bring a dish for them or have them bring one. There will be a horseshoe tournament event Saturday during the day, and the Dick Chaney - Sharp shooting (sling shot) contest. Certificates will be awarded for the various events. If you would like to assist Skipper with the events please let him know ASAP, but not later than 10 Oct.. This is a primitive area so bring your shovel for bathroom services and be ready to use it. Also, bring all your camping gear, tables, stoves, drinking and cooking water, chairs etc. Please leave the area cleaner that what you find it and if you "Pack it in - Pack it out" Skipper will serve fresh hot coffee each morning for the "early birds." The weather will be a little cooler at night so pack your "warmies and knit caps. Daytime temps are still in the mid to high 60's and just right for camping. There is plenty of area to hike and ride mountain bikes. Nearest store is about 7 to 9 miles away. Come join in the fun and sing songs around the camp fire also. "After hours camp fire" is from 9:00p.m. on. Children allowed at parents discretion..
Directions \ Take I-25 North to the 2nd Bernallio exit then take State Road 550 west to San Yisidro. (Watch your speed closely as you don't want a ticket) At San YIsidro take State Road 4 (right) towards Jemez Pueblo, shortly after Jemez Valley High School watch for our signs of the (styro plate with "cow head" and fluorescent orange streamers. Take Forest Road 376 (left) also marked as State Hiway 485 (paved for 5 miles). Again, turn left here for approximately 5 miles, where you will pass through the beautiful Gillman tunnels (2 short tunnels) continue on FR 376 (not paved but a good dirt and gravel road, 4 wheel vehicle not required), to Porters Landing area which is about 7 more miles up the road, so reset you odometer to "0" and go for about 7 miles). (Do not turn off this road along the way and watch for the fluorescent streamers along the way). As you near the rters Landing area you will see a (Styro plate with "cow head" and fluorescent streamers) sign indicating for you to turn left onto FR 534 here. (there is also a large sign marked "Fuel Cutting Area" ) turn here and go up the road for about half a mile only. Do not turn right on to 539 just continue ahead and you will see our Sign, indicating our camp site on the right side of the road where you will turn right into the area. Remember to bring warm clothes for the evening and early morning. A knit cap is also handy for late night to keep cozy. Please bring a copy of the directions with you to assure you find us. So, y all come join us for this here fun event, Round Up and Chuck Wagon Dinner. Again, Skipper will provide an enclosed 10' x 10' heated area with indoor camp fire!
