Mountain Bike Ride, “Two Wheels & Steel Wheels!” Experience a mountain bike ride unique to New Mexico! Meet at Bank of America at San Mateo and Academy at 7:45 to leave by 8:00 AM; we need to leave the Santa Fe train station no later than 9:30, want to have plenty of time as to make a reasonable pace along the way to Lamy. People in the Santa Fe area, meet us at the train station at 9 AM.
First there is MT bike ride along the tracks on a single-track path from Santa Fe to the historic Lamy (26 miles from the station to station or 18-mile from I-25 to Lamy) Then we ride the train back. For slower riders I recommend starting under I-25 overpass for a shorter trip. It has been said that this ride is downhill and not considered difficult, but can be rocky or sandy in places along with a steep hill or two (up 50 feet) on the way. Trees that provide shad are a rare find so bring plenty of sunscreen. The bike ride will take about 2.5 to 3 hours.
Next, for those that didn’t bring their own lunch, we’ll purchase lunch and seek a shady spot at the Lamy Station. Finally, it’s “all aboard,” bikes and all, for the return trip to Santa Fe on the Santa Fe Southern Railway (SFSR). A one way ticket is $20, and round trip tickets for anyone not riding a bike will be $32 or $45 depending on the Coach or Silver Class. You must make your own reservations on the SFSR in advance by calling 1-[masked] or visit the web page at www.sfsr.com. Be sure to mention if you’ll be biking, as bike space can be limited on the train. Also, bring a bungee cord to secure your bike on the train. Must bring and least 2 liters of water, clothing for the weather, sunscreen, helmet required, and lunch if you don’t get the in Lamy. Driving distance: 120 miles RT, Elevation drops: 500 – 800 ft. May stay and have dinner in Santa Fe before returning to Albuquerque.
