Meet in the parking lot at the base of the Sandia Tram at 8:00 AM. We may split up and some hikers and car pool over to the La Luz Trail for an easier start to this hike. The rest of us will follow the Tramway Trail north (steady 2.2 miles climb) until it joins the La Luz Trail where we will meet up with the others. From there we will take the remaining 6.5 miles (moderate - difficult) to the upper Sandia Tram terminal and restaurant. I’ll take a portion of the old trail into the La Cava Canon to walk through the Aspen trees in full color. Frequent stops for energy boost, sight seeing, and picture taking will be encouraged. As a reward for making it to the top, we will spend an hour or so having lunch (greenchile cheeseburger and a drink) at the restaurant and enjoy the view before returning on the Tram. The return Tram ticket is $9.00. Bring plenty of water, (at least 2 liters) high-energy type snack foods, sunscreen or protective clothing, camera, money for lunch and your Tram ticket. Plan on taking 5 – 5 1/2 hours to get to the top. We should return to the cars by 2:30 PM. No dogs please.
“ This hike was awesome! Beautiful fall colors and fantastic people to hike with. All twenty of us made it to the top! No turn backs! I'm proud of myself as I made it up in quicker time and apparently less effort than I did the last time I hiked up La Luz more than 15 years ago. ”
“ There was 23 people on thins hike. 3 started real early, 11 started La Luz trailhead and 9 started from the base of the tram. We all made it to the top in less than 6 hours. Beautiful colors of the Aspin leaves falling and on the ground. Then 20 of us had a late lunch for a reward. ”
“ Fantastic hike. Craig, Inola and I left from La Luz trailhead and made it to the top in about 3.5 hours. Unfortunately the Tram was having mechanical problems and we had to wait about an hour to go down. ”
